Air Conditioning

Modern air conditioning can provide controlled cooling for individual rooms or multiple areas of a property.

Controlled cooling for your space

An air conditioning system moves heat out of a room rather than generating cold air.

  1. Heat is absorbed An indoor unit removes heat from the air in the room.
  2. Heat is carried away Refrigerant carries that heat to the outdoor unit.
  3. Heat is released The outdoor unit releases the heat outside the building.
  4. Temperature is held The system cycles to maintain the indoor temperature that has been selected.

Depending on how a system is designed, it can serve a single room, several rooms, or multiple zones that are controlled separately.

Choosing the right approach

There is more than one way to cool a property. Which approach suits a building depends on its layout and on how the spaces are used.

  • Wall-mounted systems

    • Commonly used where individual rooms or defined areas need cooling
    • Indoor units are visible within the room
  • Multi-room and multi-split systems

    • One outdoor system can serve more than one indoor unit, depending on the design
    • Different areas can be controlled separately
  • Ducted systems

    • Conditioned air is distributed through concealed ductwork
    • Can give a more integrated visual result
    • Suitability depends on the space available and the building layout

You do not need to decide on a system type before the property and requirements have been assessed.

Designed around the property

System selection and layout are worked out from the property itself rather than applied to it.

What the design takes into account

  • Room size and layout
  • The number of areas to be cooled
  • Glazing and solar gain
  • Occupancy and how the rooms are used
  • Available locations for the outdoor unit
  • Airflow within the room
  • Visual preferences
  • The route available for pipework or ductwork

Where the outdoor unit can be positioned is a practical constraint on many installations. It is considered alongside the indoor layout rather than afterwards.

Indoor units are positioned to distribute air across the space. A considered layout aims to avoid concentrated airflow directed at the places where people sit, work or sleep.

Noise is a factor in both equipment selection and positioning, for the indoor units and for the outdoor unit.

Simple control

How a system is controlled depends on the equipment installed.

Modern systems commonly use thermostatic controls to hold a set temperature.

Where the installed system supports zoning, individual rooms or areas can be adjusted independently of one another.

Many current systems may also support app-based control or integration with smart-home systems, depending on the equipment chosen. What a particular system offers is confirmed as part of the design rather than assumed.
